You know the maxim: The best day of work is worse than the worst day of fishing. Are you an avid angler a bit tired of being confined to local lakes and streams? Think about winter fishing. Bundling up, chopping a hole in the ice or boating in blue, tropical waters. Hard decision to make? Not!!! Trade in your Chapstick and runny nose for suntan lotion, shorts and a flowered shirt, get your ticket to Costa Rica and enjoy fishing like you have always dreamed about. Costa Rica fishing is exactly what the doctor orders for winter time blues.
Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Six hours of fishing for three-and-a-half minutes of fun. Now, consider catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the awesome marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!
A great place for a Costa Rica fishing vacation is its North Pacific coast. This area is called the “Gold Coast” because of its amenities and is easilyconveniently reached. There is a new international airport at Liberia, Costa Rica, just minutes from the North Pacific Coast and your adventure. You will find the fishing centers of Tamarindo and Flamingo with miles of great beaches and lots of Costa Rica attractions. If you are looking for sailfish, travel to this coast between May and August for the best fishing, but these fish are here year-round. From August to October, you might come into large schools of different tuna species with some weighing up to 400 pounds and many exceeding 60 pounds. Catch the shoreline-dwelling roosterfish here November to March not far from the Papagayo Resort. You also have a good chance of catching large marlin, wahoo, and brightly colored dorado fish.
Billfish are a popular target for those angling in Costa Rica and the Central Pacific coast offers lots of them. Fish the waters off Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina from December to April to catch sails or marlin. Between May though October many folks catch a vibrant dorado while trolling offshore. Tuna, wahoo, snapper, roosters, and snook are also common in this region and are found closer in. You will not be disappointed fishing here!
Golfo Dulce, Drake Bay, and Puerto Jiminez are three places to consider when fishing along the South Pacific coast down to Panama. In the months where the waters are warmer, you have a great chance at hooking sailfish and large marlin. For the best inland fishing in the country, go to the Golfo Dulce area. It is a haven for many species of fish because of its rock terrain and many coves. Expect to catch sharp toothed barracuda, grouper, delicious sea bass, snapper, amberjack, wahoo, and even roosters here. Bring your camera!
Five hundred years ago, a captain named Columbus landed in the Caribbean waters off Costa Rica and gave the country its name. The waters were filled with fish, millions of sea turtles were nesting, and wildlife was incredibly abundant. When you fish the prominent fishing centers of Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero, you will be just as enthralled as Columbus. These waters can often be extremely choppy and for the best results should be generally avoided during rainy season. But, on flat days, this region can provide some of the best fishing anywhere. This is where you can find the large and spectacular tarpon fish fighting fish from May to November. These waters are also one of the very few places a lucky fisherman might catch the rare Atlantic sail. Large snook are abundant here. You could also catch Jack Crevalle, tripletail, giant grouper, or guapote.
